Blast from the Past: The Opus live @ Moment 8
June 20th, 2008
I’ve been listening to The Opus (Mr. Echoes and The Isle Of Weight) for well over a decade. They were the first hip hop producers I’ve seen bring all their hard-ware to a show and improvise live on the spot, causing heads and bodies to violently sway as if possesed. The world’s greatest beat-makers all have their signature. Dj Premier mastered the chop, Pete Rock brought a lot of soul, J-Dilla brought that bounce, the wompy bassline. The Opus’ sound is most recognized by their use of hard-hitting drums and intense break-like patterns. Moods ranging from war-like to enlightened are all spoken for. To put it simply, they are DOPE AS HELL. On top of being underground heroes here in Chicago, The Opus has also worked with an impressive list of world reknown artists such as DJ Krush, Aesop Rock, and Murs to name a few. This live-set is from Moment 8. For more about The Opus visit www.theopusonline.com

Blast from the Past 1: Garo Live @ Moment 8
April 23rd, 2008
Live set by Garo from Moment 8 (April 2007) The audio quality is not the best and the recording drops out for a few seconds in the middle as a result of a disconnected power cable. At the end of the recording you’ll hear Coyote DG making some announcements followed by the first song from his set, the rest of which unfortunately did not get recorded.

About Kate Simko:
Chicago-based Kate Simko is a classical pianist turned left field house and techno producer. Releasing music on labels such as Spectral Sound, Kupei Musika and Traum, Kate draws from a wide range of influences, combining her sense of melody and structure with her background in Chicago house and Detroit techno. Whether playing live or DJ’ing, Kate’s musical selection maintains a warm, soulful character, full of funky bass lines and loose rhythms.
Growing up studying piano and music theory, Kate discovered underground dance music during her teens and began DJ’ing on college radio in the late 90′s. At this time, Kate made a switch from a degree in classical piano to electronic music composition. In 2001, Kate moved to Santiago, Chile, where she continued her studies in music composition and met Andres Bucci. Bucci and Simko combined forces and have since recorded two full-length records together as Detalles (Traum , Kupei Musika).
A versatile DJ, Kate was named one of the Top 10 DJ’s in Chicago by XLR8R magazine. Her music has received positive remarks in zines such as The Wire, XLR8R, de:Bug, Mixmag, URB, BPM and Remix and her Detalles project was named one of the ‘Next 100′ artists by URB magazine. Kate has performed at festivals such as Mutek (Montreal and Chile), the Detroit Electronic Music Festival and Worldtronics (Berlin), and has played beside a myriad of genre defining artists throughout the United States, Europe and South America.
Back in her hometown of Chicago, Kate is honing her talents, producing and performing full time. Kate is continually evolving as an artist, combining her wide range of influences into her own music, creating a unique personal sound that crosses genre borders, blending rich textures, melodies and intricate programming with funky bass and groove.

Searchl1te – Part Time Sucker Cru : Dubfront Records : WNUR Fm : Dubstep.Fm — Chicago U.S.
Around age six, Searchl1te (aka Kee – BassByThePound Crew) appropriated the family tape recorder. Re-using abandoned cassette tapes, he documented his random glossolalia, the sound of the mic rubbing on various household objects, and interviews with his toddler brother about the state of the known universe. After being gifted a walkman by a neighbor, he began to produce radio shows in his bedroom. Tunes were cued up on the walkman, tape rolled, mic stuck in between the headphones and the latest Grandmaster Flash, Lionel Richie, and ZZ Top jammed, followed by announcements and commercials for fake shit like Mr. T Brand Toilet Paper. The next several years were spent making pause-tapes for makeout parties. Enter the turntables, jungle music, and FM radio. No matter the tools or the medium, Searchl1te lays out fierce, cavernous, densely-layered, hauntingly beautiful, eclectic mixes and tunes. Strictly sarcopha-beats and tech:freek biz. His tunes are loaded with his own field recordings from bum-fuk-everywhere as well as obscure samples from an amazingly nerdy collection of music from around the world. Searchl1te is the founder of Part Time Sucker Radio. He’s been doing non-commercial radio for over a decade, most recently with WNUR 89.3 Fm Chicago (www.WNUR.org), Vocalo 89.5 Fm Chicago (www.Vocalo.org), www.Destroyer.net, www.Dnbradio.com, and www.Dubstep.Fm. Part Time Sucker Radio serves as a creative outlet for the crew, as well as for forward-thinking dj’s, producers, and musicians in, or as they come through, the Midwestern U.S. As his day gig, Searchl1te teaches reading, writing, and music production to incarcerated kids in Chicago. Visit www.FreeWriteJailArts.org to peep the latest publications of writing and art or to listen to tracks produced and performed by his students.

Special guest: Miles Tilmann
For ten years, Miles Tilmann has been composing music that he describes as a blend of deep atmospherics, heavy sequencing, balanced with live keyboard, field recordings, and a broad assortment of rhythm. Others have described him as eclectic, refreshing, tantalizing and as a ‘ grossly under-rated American talent.’- XLR8R Magazine
Miles Tilmann’s first release under Consumers Research and Development label is a 10′, titled Over and Through. The album is an evolution of themes established by Miles’ previous release, 3D Concepts (Toytronic). Over and Through weaves atmospheric soundscapes, gentle melodic washes with wavering and brings analog basslines with splattering of percussion to anchor it down.
Miles was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan and when he was seven, moved to Florida. In 1996, while studying to be an illustrator at college in Florida, he began experimenting with music. Miles began exploring music on a keyboard which his college roommate had bought, drawing inspiration from the diverse influences of the rave music of the early 90s, industrial, the Beatles, and Pink Floyd.
In 1999, Miles moved to Chicago to pursue his interest in music and drawing. He incorporates drawing into his music through designing album covers and accompanying his CD’s and vinyl with a self-published book of pen and ink illustrations.
Miles Tilmann has releases on multiple labels. His most recent release Over and Through, is on the Consumers Research and Development label (Chicago). Miles’ other releases include 3D Concepts on Toytronic (UK) and Underland on sub:marine (Atlanta). Miles has toured the United States three times. He also plays with numerous improvisational groups in Chicago, utilizing instruments including keyboards, computers, record players and tape machines.
