Hollyweird 2.0
June 21st, 2011

The good people over at Gritty Goat have just released our friend Tall Black Guy’s Hollyweird 2.0 for free download. Why this thing is free I don’t know because it is straight MONEY. I first caught wind of Detroit native TBG at a Chicago all city beat battle where he tied for first place with Kenny Keys. Personally I thought the defending champ Rude One murdered them both in the same way I thought The Opus murdered Rude One the previous year but still, nobody can fuck with TBG’s head nod factor. I’ll never forget the first time our Moment Sound brother Garo booked TBG for a show at Darkroom as he brought his entire desktop and rocked Sonic Foundry’s Acid program with keyboard shortcuts – killed it. Hollyweird 2.0 is perfect for this time of year – summery glazed soul beats for the BBQ – grab a cutie’s hand and take a walk along the beach before swimming amongst the stars give you a brain aneurism.

Mad EP: Twenty-four Breakbeats
October 10th, 2009
The prolific song-smith and all around good guy Mad EP recently released ‘Twenty-four Breakbeats’ on Acroplane Recordings. Other than the influence by Bach’s ‘Well-Tempered Klavier’ and Shostakovich’s ’24 preludes and fugues’, the title pretty much explains it all (though if it was up to me I’d call it ‘Twenty-four Raw Buttery Breaks to Split Ya’ Face‘). Free download of the entire 24 track journey can be skwoomped here.

Chandeliers: The Thrush
September 24th, 2009
Things have been moving a bit slow over here in the past few months. Many different projects underway – records, the big apples, thoughts of a/v installations – that don’t leave time for the interwebs… but we will try to get better about keeping everyone up to date about the latest goings on. For now, check out the amazing band that is Chandeliers . They have recently released their second album, Dirty Moves that you can check out on their site, however, for now we’re going to focus on their first album that we still haven’t gotten enough of: THE THRUSH. It is an eclectic collection of synthed-out krautrock jams: a very refreshing and contemporary take on the classic vintage sounds. Beautifully produced, the album has a very raw live sound, at times mysterious, at times playful. This could totally be a soundtrack to a far-out 70′s low-budged sci-fi film about the earth being invaded by benevolent dancing alien robots that shoot their neon lazers all over the place.

Today it is really hard for an MC to impress let alone entertain me. Maybe I’m just turning into a bah-humbug, or possibly after submerging my head in the flows of the greatest MCs who ever lived for nearly 30 years, today it takes a lot to peak my interest. Simply put, it takes someone really…IL.
Chicago native IL. Subliminal‘s attack has a bit of everything that makes an MC listenable; style, delivery, voice, content, and above all, passion. As pop culture and corporate control continues to dumb-down the masses, intellectual hip hop looses more and more footing not only because of the culprits but frankly, majority of conscious rappers don’t sound “cool” enough. IL. Subliminal is a breath of fresh, cool air; a combination of underground conscious burnerism and no-frills rawness that is suitable for the aficionado as well as those who need catchy enough motives to be enticed beyond their A.D.D.
Designed to be listened to from beginning to end, this is a true mixtape featuring a plethora of producers and guest MCs superbly mixed by DJ SeaNile. For more information including production credits visit IL.’s blog. (photo by Kinga).

Release’s Release
September 25th, 2008
Last month my good friend Ari AKA Release celebrated his debut LP. Four years in the making, Release From Within is a 23 song labor of love featuring many Chicago based MCs and singers, as well as instrumentals often maintaining a unique air of humility (like my personal favorite “Young Sun”). The entire album can be downloaded for free at Cypher Infinitum (be sure to check out Lord 360′s weekly comic strip Anti-Pop Gun while you’re there).

The Night That Laid Still – an EP by Justin McGrath
March 16th, 2008
The Night That Laid Still out on shade::red
A great self-released EP from Justin McGrath [justinmcgrath.com]. The title track tastefully combines live instrumentation with programmed drums and sound design elements to create a dreamy, melancholy mood reminding me of all those nights that I wish stood still, but unfortunately did not, inevitably coming to an end. The following track, “Overly Conscious”, lightens the mood a bit (but only a bit) with its pensive violins and rich piano chords. The dreaminess and spaciousness of the title track then develop into ever deeper and moodier expanses of soothing (yet eerie) ambiance of the following pieces. This is where the journey begins. We leave our mundane concerns and self-indulgent desires and begin to experience something else, something otherworldly, pure and light. Hope I’m not sounding too new agy… but really, if you let your mind drift along withe the sounds, you’ll end up in some magical places. Finally “Deconstruction” gently brings you back to to reality while soothing piano and guitar reinterpret the title track.
The accompanying video, by Bridget Driessen (who also did the artwork) provides a great visual component (you can get an idea by watching the teaser video).
The EP also includes a bonus collections of Remixes.
Blackdaylight “The Second Season Mix”
January 24th, 2008
Momentsound congratulates Thomas McCauley AKA Blackdaylight for his first netlabel release “The Second Season Mix” available for free @ www.stigaemusic.com
Blackdaylight’s sound has often been described as “lava-love” music; Deep and sexy, something lovers can bubble-bath to. “The Second Season” however takes on a more pensive stance. The title track grabs you by the hand and takes you through an erie wilderness as if to deliver a secret message. As the next few songs progress one cannot escape the feeling of being lead through time (Teeth2, Lost in the Moment), as if you’re Ebenezer and The Ghost of Christmas Past is showing you your wickedness. Pain and sadness are bold themes throughout the EP yet an underlying sense of peace persists. Just when the heavy current is about to engulf you (“BetaWaves600Below”) the city awakes with “West End Autumn Blaze Mix”. Picture Big Bird blunted w/ shades on – a slow burner for mature relaxation. “The Second Season Mix” closes w/ the sonic completeness of jazz; guitar, bass, and horns over deep pulsing drums only the most sincere beat-heads like Blackdaylight can lace. The Second Season Approaches! Don’t sleep!
