Thea, Suzanne and Ashley traveled to Miami for the Art Basel Miami Beach Fair. The warm weather offered a welcome respite from New York’s short winter days. Design Miami opened proceedings with a showcase of furniture by Mid-Century and Contemporary designers. A highlight was seeing the unique functional tables designed by Jewelry designer Taher Chemirik at the booth of Galerie BSL. At Art Basel Miami the Berlin gallery NeugerRiemschneider showed an exceptional group of works that included pieces by Isa Genzken, Ai WeiWei and Olafur Eliasson, and a terrific set of table and chairs by Jorge Pardo and Paris-based Galerie Crousel displayed strong works by Gabriel Orozco, Danh Vo, Wolfgang Tillmans and Willem de Rooij. Much of the art in Miami seems geared towards the parties and promotions that have come to characterize the event, accessories to the social whirl. Thanks to a minority of dealers like NeugerRiemschneider, Crousel and Galerie Buchholz, for those whose first priority is art, high quality works could be found and serious discussion could still be had. After the overload of the Art Basel Miami Beach fair, Ashley took time to visit NADA Art Fair, which caters to young and emerging galleries. Artworks at NADA are often by emerging artists, and though uneven in quality, galleries including 47 Canal, Essex Street and Real Fine Arts showed work that might in future times be seen as defining of our current moment. As a coda to the fairs, Ashley and Suzanne visited a number of the Miami collections which open new shows including the de la Cruz Collection, DACRA and the Rubell Family Collection.
