As the Fall Season continued, Thea, Suzanne, Rob and Ashley made time to visit many of the gallery exhibitions of interest spread out among New York’s diverse neighborhoods. Suzanne, Rob and Ashley were fortunate to see Haroon Mirza at the New Museum’s project space Studio 231, Henrik Olesen at Reena Spaulings Fine Art, Rey Akdogan at Miguel Abreu Gallery, Shimon Minamikawa at 47 Canal and Valerie Snobeck at Essex Street Gallery. The following week Thea, Suzanne, Rob and Ashley were given a preview of Kerstin Brätsch’s ambitious new exhibition at Gavin Brown’s Enterprise. The gallery’s associate-director Bridget Donahue, who had been co-ordinating the exhibition with the artist for much of the summer, spoke eloquently about the artist’s collaborations with glass artists in Zurich and the influence of Sigmar Polke on this new body of work. Covering Chelsea, and galleries close by, the team saw Penny Slinger’s exhibition of works largely from the 1970s at Broadway 1602, Zoe Leonard’s sublime exhibition of new photographs at Murray Guy, the double show of David Diao and Walid Raad at Paula Cooper Gallery and Elad Lassry’s architectural installation with photos and a film piece at The Kitchen. On October 4, Wade Guyton’s highly anticipated survey exhibition curated by Scott Rothkopf opened at the Whitney Museum of American Art. While Ashley and Suzanne viewed the exhibition the day it opened, Thea and Rob caught up later in the week, viewing the exhibition first thing one Friday morning. Thea also made time before leaving to Europe to catch the Mike Kelley exhibition at Skarstedt Gallery and the exhibition of works by Japanese Gutai artists at Hauser & Wirth, which included beautiful abstract paintings by Atsuko Tanaka, Tsuruko Yamazaki, Kazuo Shiraga, and Sadamasa Motonaga.
