Philadelphia: Dancing Around the Bride
News 17:00 PM - 14 Nov 12

Thea, Ethan, Suzanne and Ashley had the pleasure of traveling to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to see the exhibition Dancing Around the Bride: Cage, Cunningham, Johns, Rauschenberg and Duchamp. The exhibition, curated by Carlos Basualdo, was developed in collaboration with the Algerian-born artist Philippe Parreno who wove together the fields of dance, music and the visual arts through his interventions. Taking as its starting point Marcel Duchamp’s masterpiece The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (The Large Glass), 1915-1923, the exhibition explored the influence of Duchamp on John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. At the opening, Thea, Ethan, Suzanne and Ashley were treated to a performance by former members of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company to a dance choreographed by Cunningham. Following this extraordinary event Parreno’s gallerist Pilar Corrias graciously hosted cocktails to celebrate. While in Philadelphia, Thea, Ethan, Suzanne and Ashley also took time to visit the new home for the Barnes Foundation. The re-location of the foundation caused controversy; nonetheless, the collection of Albert C. Barnes remains one of the most intriguing groupings of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art in America.
