NEW YORK — Blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction, Ryan Gander assembles seemingly disparate objects, actions and texts to develop his own narrative systems. Characterized by conceptual rigor, visual simplicity and allusive text, Ryan Gander’s works probe the processes of emergence and the mechanisms of perception entailed by the work of art. Installations, photographs, performances, publications and press inserts are his means of following up a train of thought concerning art’s discursive potential and its transmission systems. His practice, which makes extensive use of language and work with other artists, aims at “making the invisible visible” and providing the “possibility and preconditions for things to happen”.
For Independent, NY Westreich Wagner Publications will feature Ryan Gander’s “I’m Trending” for Independent, NY. Fourteen pairs of resin casts hosted in cardboard and fabric slipcases, 9mm plywood boards of varying sizes. Each pair is identically worn and has received identical minor damages, splintering, scratches and sinks. Each individual board within a pair is painted a different color.
Taken from the language usurped by Twitter, the title for Ryan Gander’s I’M TRENDING is prescribed to the way in which multiplied uses of a word, idea or concept grows in popularity based on the nature of its repetitive use.
By the artist’s account, this project is viewed as a collision between the book and an artwork; what happens when various forms coalesce? Paralleled with the Loose Associations conferences initiated in 2001 (and just as eclectically diffused in assemblage and interpretation) Ryan Gander’s I’M TRENDING is a series of tools and clues from which our established patterns of logic, thought and design are questioned and redefined.
I’M TRENDING is the first joint publication between Three Star Books and Westreich / Wagner publications.
