ARCHETYPE:

archetype

New York City-based electronic music producer Charles Noel, aka Archetyp, worked quietly behind the scenes of electronic dance music throughout the 1990s, overseeing the experimental imprint called the 21-22 Corporation. His label featured a diverse palette of electronic music from the likes of Nu Era (4 hero), Morgan Geist (Metro Area) and
Dan Curtin, among others, and tested the limitations of graphic design and package design (Columbus Society of Communication Arts “Judge’s Choice Award of 2000″ - award of merit), while releasing some of Ohio’s best-regarded electronic music to date.

His academic study of music and digital media at the Ohio State University (M.F.A. 1999) served as a seed to pursue underground electronic music. As co-founder of Ele_mental artists’ collective with Todd Sines and Titonton Duvante, he played an important role energizing the nascent underground electronic music scene throughout Ohio, while bringing cutting-edge artists to Columbus including Claude Younge, Juan Atkins, DJ Rolando, and DJ Spooky.

With several full-length albums under his belt on Jay Denham’s (Disko-B, transmat) BlackNation Records, and the U.K.’s Theory Records, as well as a slew of singles and appearances on numerous compilations and mix CDs, Charles (better known to the world as Archetyp) is no stranger to the international electronic music scene. Thanks largely to the BlackNation releases, as well as other well-received EPs on Klang Electronic’s mother label Ongaku, his own offshoot from the 21-22 Corporation (Glyph), and Ben Sims’ Theory label, Noel has taken his place among the top echelon of artists redefining techno music in the 2000s. His downtempo and hip hop productions caught the ear of the Good Looking Organization label-head LTJ Bukem, who quickly signed Charles to his label’s roster of talent. The first release appeared on the Good Looking downtempo sub-label (Cookin’ Records) with fellow New York artist M.C. L. Black. Currently Charles has been cutting his own path with his genre straddling productions that fuse various traits of Detroit Techno, Chicago House, Broken Beat, and 70’s funk.

Charles has also performed in various venues around North America and Europe, including after-hours performances for the Detroit Electronic Music Festival with Akufen and Orlando Voorn and the SONAR festival in Barcelona, appearing alongside Jeff Mills, Aphex Twin, Richard Divine, Matmos, and John Peel. His music expanded farther east in 2002 during a tour of Japan with Fumiya Tanaka and label-mate Ricardo Villaobos, where he headlined a live performance at the world-famous Liquid Room in Tokyo.

Below you will find live recordings from the Intimate Ambiance party we hosted at El Dorado. The event turned out to be quite amazing and all together lasted about 12 hours. There were pillows blankets, stuffed animals relaxed people, a mysterious script, a few spills, a missing jacket, bags full of bags, a box of games, a very strange puzzle, stretches, an amazing massage, a record player that plays slow and weird, a waterphone, candles, sleepers, and lots of great ambiance.

About Kate Simko:

Chicago-based Kate Simko is a classical pianist turned left field house and techno producer. Releasing music on labels such as Spectral Sound, Kupei Musika and Traum, Kate draws from a wide range of influences, combining her sense of melody and structure with her background in Chicago house and Detroit techno. Whether playing live or DJ’ing, Kate’s musical selection maintains a warm, soulful character, full of funky bass lines and loose rhythms.

Growing up studying piano and music theory, Kate discovered underground dance music during her teens and began DJ’ing on college radio in the late 90’s. At this time, Kate made a switch from a degree in classical piano to electronic music composition. In 2001, Kate moved to Santiago, Chile, where she continued her studies in music composition and met Andres Bucci. Bucci and Simko combined forces and have since recorded two full-length records together as Detalles (Traum , Kupei Musika).

A versatile DJ, Kate was named one of the Top 10 DJ’s in Chicago by XLR8R magazine. Her music has received positive remarks in zines such as The Wire, XLR8R, de:Bug, Mixmag, URB, BPM and Remix and her Detalles project was named one of the ‘Next 100′ artists by URB magazine. Kate has performed at festivals such as Mutek (Montreal and Chile), the Detroit Electronic Music Festival and Worldtronics (Berlin), and has played beside a myriad of genre defining artists throughout the United States, Europe and South America.

Back in her hometown of Chicago, Kate is honing her talents, producing and performing full time. Kate is continually evolving as an artist, combining her wide range of influences into her own music, creating a unique personal sound that crosses genre borders, blending rich textures, melodies and intricate programming with funky bass and groove.
